Engraved in Slate

"New Years is a time for new beginnings.
Now if I could just figure out where to start."
- Melanie White

2016 feels like a good year. But then again, I say that about every year in hopes that luck will choose to shine on me.

01/01/16. The mark of a new year. A new beginning.

I don't believe in a clean slate. "Having a clean slate" exists only literally having a slate that is clean - or at birth (well if you want to count your time in the womb, that too). Every single day, the things you do go on that figurative slate - it's not just scribbled on, it's engraved. And no matter what you do, you can't start over. You can't erase.

It's not a game - Life. There is no restart button, no pause or resume. And whatever is on that slate of yours will stay - Forever. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

At the beginning of each year, your slate gets built on. All that stuff etched on your slate is a reminder of it all so never forget it. It's is there to serve as sort of a...a memento...as a story of your life - it's there for you to learn from.

The pain you endured to get here, the mistakes you need to learn from, the risks you took and failed. They're all there. But you also have the memories you look upon fondly. The feelings of happiness, having fun with your friends and family, the chances you took and succeeded, your morals and hopes and dreams. They never go away. Because it's all engraved there.

There's no such thing as starting over. "Wiping the slate clean"...? It's bad to let go of everything, even the bad things. Remember those things, and let them guide you toward a path of good.

At least, that's what I think.

Life isn't that easy. The going only gets harder and only those quick to learn from their mistakes succeed.

  1. Melissa, I always love your deep perspective on things. It provides such a clear view on your unique ideas. Also, I laughed at the edit about the time....so hilarious about how it all worked out.
